Submission of Manuscripts

All submissions should be made electronically through Scholastica. Authors will need to login using an existing Scholastica account or create a new one in order to submit.

A separate file with all the names and affiliations of each author is to be submitted (see the section below on biodata and author contributions). The title, abstract, and keywords should be the only information on the first page of the manuscript. There should be no acknowledgements, footnotes, or other information that could be used to identify the authors.

N.B. To protect your identity from the peer reviewers, we ask Authors to remove the following:

Any headers or footers that may identity authors.

Any author names or affiliations located within the manuscript, as well as in any supplemental information files (such as Appendices) or filenames.

Any details that could be used to determine your identification, such as footnotes and acknowledgements.

All identifiers from your electronic files. Documents prepared using Microsoft Word will contain personal or hidden information in file Properties such as Author, Manager, Company, and Last Saved By. On the File menu, click ‘info’, and then select ‘inspect Document’. Next select ‘document properties’ and ‘personal information’.

Figures, Tables, and Illustrative Content

Format:
TIFF, JPEG – Common formats for images.
EPS – Preferred format for graphs and line art (preserves quality when zoomed).
Figures, charts, and tables should be created in MS Word.
Screenshots of figures, charts and tables should not be used (image quality will be poor).
Resolution and Legibility:
All figures, illustrations, and graphical elements must be submitted in high resolution to ensure clarity and quality in both print and digital formats.
Bitmap images (e.g., JPEG, PNG and GIF) must be at least 300 dpi.
All digital content should be large enough to remain readable when the figure is reduced to fit within the journal’s formatting requirements
Fonts:
Use consistent font styles and sizes (preferably Times New Roman).

Biodata, Order of Names, Authorship & Author Contributions

A brief biography of each author is to be submitted in a separate file that lists their highest degree, institutional affiliation, current position (s), and research areas of interest. For submissions with more than one author, the order in which their names is to appear on the published paper (if it is accepted) and their contribution to the work shall be stated using the CRediT Taxonomy (https://credit.niso.org/).

Regarding authorship criteria, JAST requires authors to adhere to the guidelines established by organizations such as the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE; https://www.icmje.org/about-icmje/) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE; https://publicationethics.org/). The ICMJE specifies four key criteria for authorship. To be listed as an author, an individual must meet all of the following:

  1. Substantial contributions to the conception, design, data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of the study.
  2. Drafting or critically revising the manuscript for important intellectual content.
  3. Final approval of the version to be published.
  4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, ensuring its accuracy and integrity.

Use of Artificial Intelligence and Related Technologies

Authors should not list generative AI technologies as co-authors or authors of any submitted manuscript. These tools cannot be held accountable for the content and therefore do not meet the criteria for authorship.  Any use of generative AI tools must be transparently acknowledged in an Acknowledgements section and, where applicable, in the Methodology section. This acknowledgment must include the name, version, model, and source of the technology used. All AI-generated or AI-edited content must be carefully checked for accuracy, integrity, and originality to ensure it is free from plagiarism and aligns with ethical research standards.

Peer Review Process

Submissions undergo a double-blind, confidential peer review process. Author identity is concealed from reviewers, and reviewer identities are not revealed to authors. Whenever a manuscript is submitted, initial checks, including for possible plagiarism, are conducted in relation to conformity with the requirements and alignment with the scope of of JAST. An Editor will thereafter be assigned to procure competent, independent reviewers to assess an anonymised version of the manuscript. Possible outcomes of this peer review process are: Accept, Revise and Resubmit, or Reject.

All communication concerning manuscripts will be with the designated corresponding author.

Manuscripts that do not adhere to the submission guidelines may be returned to the corresponding author. Feel free to contact our editorial team at jasteditor@utech.edu.jm if you have any questions or need help.

Publication Fees

At this time, authors are not required to pay a publication fee to publish in JAST.
